Big data: New York and Microsoft partners against crime

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a few days ago a partnership with Microsoft which gave birth to a new tool for law enforcement and the fight against terrorism, called Domain Awareness System.
This technology aims to rapidly collect and analyze all available and relevant data from various sources, such as the 3000 CCTV cameras in the city or plate readers. "It will help the New York Police Department to better prevent and respond to crime more effectively. '
According to the municipal authorities, here are some ways in which the system will be used:
- Investigators have immediate access to information via live video stream and will immediately suspect's criminal record, 911 calls associated with the suspect, the crimes that occurred in the neighborhood, etc..
- The police chiefs can query databases for mapping, review and correlate the information with criminal deployment of resources.
